Nobody's No Better Than No One 7" party

Freya Josephine Hollick to Release ‘Nobody’s No Better Than No One’

- The debut single from her upcoming album The Real World -

‘Nobody’s No Better Than No One’ is the first single from Freya Josephine Hollick’s forthcoming album The Real World to be released through Blind Date Records in 2020.

Recorded in the Mojave Desert in California at famed studio Rancho de la Luna with Lucinda Williams’ band Buick 6 and renowned guitarist Greg Leisz (Eric Clapton, Beck, Sheryl Crow, Emmylou Harris et al), the track is saturated in desert vibes and the unmistakable Rancho sound. The studio’s sound is heard on records such as Mark Lanegan’s Bubblegum, Arctic Monkeys’ Humbug, or the Desert Sessions including work by PJ Harvey.

The album was recorded over two and half day, following unprecedented desert snowfall and in-between partying with Gram Parson's ghost at the Joshua Tree Inn and exploring the National Park. With the pedal steel guitar amps parked outside on the front porch next to the resident roadrunner, Buick 6 tucked in a back room next to the drum kit, piano, countless guitars, alien masks and fairy lights, Greg Leisz lost in a hideaway full of synths, Hollick wedged between an oven and a fridge, and Shane Reilly and Tom Brooks between the coffee table and the console. Takes were punctuated by shots of Rancho mezcal and Butch Norton’s tall tales from the road.

Stepping away a little further from the sound of her previous releases, the first taste of Hollick’s new work enters the world of desert blues and rock, the single and record heavily influenced by Gene Clark’s 1974 album No Other. Evidenced by the sonic landscape of the single that blends synths, affected vocals, dark percussion, lap-steel and crunching rock guitars. ‘Nobody’s No Better Than No One’ is a song written as a modern day anthem for the underdog and listeners can expect an album of songs that question the status quo.

The vinyl 7’ of ‘Nobody’s No Better Than No One’ features the exclusive instrumental track ‘Senorita Blvd’ recorded by Lucinda Williams’ band Buick 6 and gifted to Hollick for this special release.

Blind Date Records and Hollick are set to celebrate the release of the first single from her USA record with a performance of a selection of songs from her forthcoming record on September 21 at Big House Arts, Coburg North. The night will include appearances by a number of Hollick’s favourite local artists backed by a string quartet. “We wanted to throw a party that resembles the sweet times had recording at Rancho De la Luna in Joshua Tree California,” she states. “Bighouse Arts will be kitted out with desert projections, fairy lights and some other Rancho style junk along with a top quality sound system.”

$50 tix (limited to just 150) includes a margarita on entry and unlimited beer/wine for the rest of the night and of course delicious and authentic tacos.

$60 tix get you all of the above and a pre-order of the vinyl 7”

Live performances end at 10pm and surprise guest DJ's play till midnight for dancing and celebration.
